The federal government releases a number of its publications online. This is a listing of some of those that are updated on a regular basis. The library subscribes to most of these items. Please consult the catalog for additional information.

  • Basic Facts about Trademarks
    Describes what a trademark is and how to file for one.  Issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. 

  • Consumer Price Index
    Issued monthly from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it includes data on changes in the prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services.  Commonly described as the cost of living index. 

  • County Business Patterns
    Provides detailed economic data by industry for each county for every state in the country.  Published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.  Data is the most recent available, but may be a few years old. 

  • Economic Indicators
    This monthly compilation is prepared for the Joint Economic Committee by the Council of Economic Advisors and provides economic information on prices, wages, production, business activity, purchasing power, credit, money and federal finance.

  • Employment Situation Summary
    Monthly news releases from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics providing statistics on employment and unemployment within the U.S. economy. 

  • General Information Concerning Patents
    Published every few years by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, it describes what a patent is and how to apply for one.

  •  Importing into the United States
    Describes how one can imports goods into the United States.  Published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. 

  • Monthly Labor Review
    Monthly publication from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics with articles about labor and labor relations.   Includes some labor statistics. 

  • North American industry classification system
    Classifies business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business and industrial economy.  Published by the Bureau of the Census. |

  • Producer Price Index News Release
    A monthly measure of the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output.  Published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

  • Survey of Current Business
    Monthly publication of the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis with articles on business, industry and the general economy. 



  • Occupational Outlook Handbook
    A source of career information which is designed to provide valuable assistance to individuals making decisions about their future work lives. 

  • Occupational Outlook Quarterly
    Quarterly publication which profiles careers and industries and presents occupational trends. 





  • Uniform Crime Reports
    A series of  annual publications from the Federal Bureau of Investigation detailing crime throughout the United States.



  • Condition of Education
    Annual publication of the U.S. Department of Education which summarizes important developments and trends in education. 

  • Digest of Education Statistics
    Annual compilation of statistics from the National Center for Education Statistics covering American education from kindergarten through graduate school.



  • Annual Energy Outlook
    Published annually by the U.S. Energy Information Administration projecting U.S. energy supply, demand and prices into the future.

  • Annual Energy Review
    A publication of the U.S. Energy Information Administration containing historical annual U.S. energy statistics about production, consumption and trade of a variety of energy sources. 

  • International Energy Annual
    Annual report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration detailing historical statistics about international production, consumption and trade of energy. 

  • International Energy Outlook
    Annual projection from the U.S. Energy Information Administration of international energy supply, demand and prices into the future.

  • Agricultural Statistics
    Statistics published annually by the U.S. Department of Agriculture detailing agricultural production, supplies, consumption, facilities, costs and returns. 


  • Background Notes
    Published by the U.S. Department of State.  Facts about the land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy and foreign relations of every country in the world.

  • Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774 – Present
    A publication of the U.S. Congress that gives biographical information for every member of Congress since 1774. 

  • Budget of the United States Government
    Issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the Budget of the United States Government is a collection of documents that contains the budget message of the President, information about the President's budget proposals for a given fiscal year, and other budgetary publications that have been issued throughout the fiscal year. 

  • Congressional directory
    Prepared by the Joint Committee on Printing , it presents short biographies of each member of the Senate and House, listed by state or district, and additional data. 

  • Congressional District Atlas
    Maps and other information for every congressional district in the U.S

  • Constitution of the United States, Analysis and Interpretation
    Has the text and extensive commentary on the United States constitution. 

  • United States Government Manual
    The official handbook of the Federal Government, which provides comprehensive information on the agencies of the legislative, judicial, and executive branches and quasi-official agencies, international organizations in which the United States participates, and boards, commissions, and committees. 

  • World Factbook
    An annual publication of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency with facts about every country in the world. 


  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance
    This is a listing of all federal programs available to state and local governments,  federally-recognized Indian tribal governments; territories (and possessions) of the United States; domestic public, quasi-public, and private profit and non-profit organizations and institutions; specialized groups; and individuals. 



  • Health Information for International Travel
    Know before you go.  Published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it lists general health hazards to travelers, immunization recommendations and information on specific infectious diseases one may encounter abroad.

  • Health, United States
  • Annual publication from the National Center for Health Statistics, which presents national trends in health statistics, such as birth rates, infant mortality, life expectancy and health care financing. 


Social Security

  • Medicare and You
    Published annually by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, this is the official government handbook for explaining Medicare and its drug plan to its applicants.

  • Social Security Handbook
    Detailed, but easy-to-read explanation of the Social Security program published by the Social Security Administration. 

  • Social Security Programs Throughout the World
  • Highlights the principal features of social security programs in over 170 countries around the world.





  • Highway Statistics
    An annual publication of the Federal Highway Administration with statistics on motor vehicle use and registration, highway use and funding and other aspects of highway transportation. 

  • Light Lists

    Published annually by the U.S. Coast Guard.  Contains a listing of lights, buoys and other aids to marine navigation. 

  • National Transportation Statistics
    Presents information on the U.S. transportation system, including its physical components, safety record, economic performance, energy use and environmental impacts.  Published annually by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics of the U.S. Department of Transportation. 

  • Traffic Safety and Facts Annual
    Published annually by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.  Contains statistics on motor vehicle collisions within the U.S.   


  • The National Parks: Index
    A listing published by the National Parks Service of all the national parks, monuments and preserves in the U.S.



  • Federal Benefits for Veterans

    The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs publishes this item annually, which describes the federal benefits and programs available to veterans.
