Book Discussion: A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith

<day>Wednesday</day>
1:00 - 2:30 p.m. or 7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
<details>Open to district residents only. Limit of 12 people.</details>

Eleven-year-old Francie Nolan is the daughter of Irish immigrants who live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. She loves her family, her neighborhood and Brooklyn itself. This coming-of-age novel, set at the turn of the 20th century, is full of joy and heartache for Francie. Her family struggles to make ends meet - her mother Katie cleans the tenement house where they live to pay their rent, put food on the table and clothes on their backs. Francie’s father Johnny is a singing waiter but often finds himself drunk and therefore out of a job.
When tragedy strikes the Nolans, life changes for them all, and not always for the better. The children must grow up and help support the family in any way they can, leaving Francie to wonder if her dreams will ever be fulfilled or if she is destined to live the hard life her mother has endured. Smith’s ground-breaking novel paints a nostalgic portrait of early 1900s Brooklyn and its community.
Sign up begins Wednesday, March 10 at the adult reference desk. You will receive a copy of the
book and discussion questions at that time.

<day>Wednesday</day>

Theodore Roosevelt’s usual response to setbacks, in this case a presidential defeat, was to round up an adventure and the unexplored River of Doubt tributary of the Amazon sounded like a perfect challenge. Son Kermit and two dozen others, each with unique personal goals, set off in canoes. After encountering impassable rapids and other obstacles, survival quickly became the focus of the entire party. As a former National Geographic writer, Millard deftly recreates this life-threatening voyage.

<day>Thursday</day>
7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
<details> </details>

The rebel song has been a mainstay of traditional Irish music for centuries. Although many of these are well-known to American audiences, there are phrases, descriptions and place names in the songs that we are not familiar with. Mike McCormack, the national historian for the Ancient Order of Hibernians, will provide background information for a program of Irish songs performed by John Corr. Corr, a member of the legendary Paddy Doyle’s Boots, will accompany his resonant baritone voice with guitar and 5-string banjo while Mike will employ his bodhran (Irish frame drum).

<day>Thursday</day>

<details> </details>

This illustrated lecture is a glimpse of the watercolor paintings and meticulous egg temperas of Wyeth’s world—the rolling, verdant hills of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and the rugged coast of Cushing, Maine as well as the women who posed and lived in these locations. Wyeth, who died last year at the age of 92, was considered a realist: his art was seemingly tranquil but vibrates eerily with death, secrecy and sensuality. Louise Cella Caruso, art lecturer, presents this fascinating and well-researched tribute to his work.

Lisa See paints a delicate, heartbreaking portrait of nineteenth-century China with her rendering of lifelong friends Lily and Snow Flower. A fan adorned by Snow Flower arrives for Lily when their match as “laotongs” (old sames) is initiated by matchmaker Madame Wang. This fan will serve as a journal of important messages passed between the girls in “nu shu” (a written language used only by women) as they go through foot binding, betrothals to men they have never met, and the demands of married life to bear sons and please their difficult mothers-in-law. Famine and war cannot destroy their fidelity to one another but a misunderstanding in nu shu hurts the considerable pride of Lily, who has married well and is now Lady Lu. Years of painful separation end with a poignant reunion too long in coming.
Sign-up begins Wednesday, February 10 at the adult reference desk. You will receive a copy of the book with discussion questions at this time.
