How Do I...?

Request an item from another library (ILL)?

What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

ILL is a service that allows library members to obtain material not owned by the Connetquot Library.

Who can use ILL?

ILL service is available to any library card holder in good standing. That is, the card is not blocked by fines, overdue materials, or incorrect address.

What is not available through ILL?

  • Material in high demand at the lending library, such as bestsellers, new books, or those needed for a program.
  • Rare or valuable material that would be difficult or impossible to replace.
  • Material with local circulation restrictions, such as reference books and Civil Service or similar test preparation.
  • Periodicals (magazines, newspapers, etc.). Copies of articles may be requested with properly verified citations.

How many items can I request?

You may have 5 active requests at one time, including items currently checked out.

How long can I keep the material?

Loan periods vary with the type of material loaned (microfilm, audio, video, etc.). The loan period is establised by the lending library.

Can I renew an item?

Renewal of material depends upon the lending library. You must call or come into the library to renew an ILL.

Is there a fee?

There is no charge for items borrowed within the State of New York. Items that are borrowed from outside of New York will have a minimum fee of $10.00 and may cost as much as $25.00.

Will I be notified when my material arrives?

You will be notified by email, phone, or mail when your item arrives.

How do I place a request for Interlibrary Loan?

You may call (631-567-5079), email (question@connetquotlibrary.org), or come into the library to speak with a librarian.

What if I can't wait for an Interlibrary Loan?

If you need material immediately, you can ask a reference librarian if it is owned by another library in Suffolk County for Direct Access. That is, you will go to the holding library to pick up the material yourself. Any Connetquot Library card in good standing  will be honored by any library located in Suffolk County. Some material may be restricted, such as bestsellers, new books, or items in high demand. It is best to call first to see if an item is available to non-district patrons.
