As explained in the summer newsletter, the library needs to remove asbestos floor tile in the old portion of the library. Connetquot Public Library was originally built in 1978 and the oldest part of the building was constructed using flooring tile that contains asbestos. This floor tile has since been covered by carpeting that now needs replacement. Asbestos tile becomes a problem when it is or has the potential to be broken into pieces. Since we are a public building, in order for us to complete this carpet replacement safely, it has become necessary to also remove this asbestos floor tile. The work will be done where the circulation desk, DVDs/audio-visual materials and children’s areas are now located. When removing asbestos tile, there cannot be any shelving, books or desks in the area where there is a chance asbestos dust could settle. This project will involve moving all shelving, desks and furniture out of the area where the tile removal will take place.
The safety of our patrons is our highest concern; therefore we will need to close the library to complete this project. The library will close at 5pm on Friday, August 20 and we will aim to reopen by Wednesday, September 8. During this period of time we will empty the section, remove the carpet and remove the asbestos tile, according to asbestos abatement regulations. Then we will install new carpet and tile and return the furniture, shelving and materials to their original locations. We realize that the community depends on its library and we want to accomplish this task during the library’s quietest time. Our goal is to reopen by Wednesday, September 8, but as you know things can arise with construction projects that may be beyond our control. We will not be able to reopen safely until the air has been tested and found safe and the furniture and shelving has been returned to their original locations. We will alert everyone via the webpage (www.connetquotlibrary.org) and over our phone system (567-5079) as soon as we know it is safe to open.
All due dates will be adjusted to reflect this closing. All holds can be placed as normal, but know that if you do not pick up your available holds by August 20 at 5pm you will have to wait until after we reopen to pick them up. Nothing will be overdue or pulled from the holds shelf until the week of September 13. Local libraries are aware that we will be closed and they will welcome you to use their services. Please realize you will have to follow their lending rules and computer policies and that you will be considered a non-resident. If you choose to use another library while we are closed, we would suggest calling them first as each library has different policies.
If anyone has any questions or concerns feel free to contact Kimberly DeCristofaro, Library Director, at 567-5079 for more information. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we continue to improve your library.
