Etched in Sand, a New York Times best seller, is the very local story of Regina Calcaterra, one of five siblings, all with different fathers, who shared a mother who was mentally ill, abusive, and left them for long stretches of time. Now a successful lawyer who has served as Chief Deputy County Executive for Suffolk County, executive director of the Moreland Commission on Public Utility Preparedness and Response, and is currently an attorney for the state of New York, Regina recounts how she and her siblings stole food, slept in cars and behind stores in boxes, and strategized to avoid foster care, feeling they were safer together. All of this took place right here in Ronkonkoma, St. James, Centereach, and Lindenhurst during the 1970s and '80s.
