An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff
Open to district residents only. Limit of 20 people.
This true story begins in 1986, when Laura is approached by a young panhandler while walking down a Manhattan street. After initially ignoring him, Laura turns back and the two end up sharing a meal at McDonald's. The meals become a regular meeting and Laura soon becomes a mentor and guardian angel of sorts to Maurice, whose drug-addicted family cannot meet his needs. Unknown to Maurice is the reality that Laura's "ideal" suburban upbringing in Huntington was also filled with domestic violence. Their friendship endures to the present and is an inspiring read.
