Book Discussion: The Irresistible Henry House by Lisa Grunwald
Open to district residents only. Limit of 16 people.
During the mid-twentieth-century in America, some college home economics programs actually utilized "practice babies" (infants from the local orphanage) to teach mothering skills to co-eds. Author Grunwald has imagined the life of one such baby, Henry House, in her novel with the beguiling infant growing into a man who can charm a woman into caring for him but is unable to make a lasting connection. This unique coming-of-age tale follows Henry from infanthood to his career at Disney studios and beyond, all the while capturing the eras he lives in (the fifties and sixties) as adeptly as Henry's lack of real love. Will meeting another grown-up practice baby finally help Henry understand himself? Sign-up begins Wednesday, February 13 at the adult reference desk. You will receive a copy of the book and discussion questions at that time.
